the sounds of summer 2009: 14 must hear new bands, by aaron axelsen
1. HEY CHAMP- Chicago electro-dance groovers will have you blissfully dancing around all summer long with their ridiculously good debut EP 'Cold Dust Girl' (for fans of: Lcd Soundsytem, Cut Copy, Human League, Van She, Anything Box, Steve Masters' record collection circa 1987-1991)
LISTEN: "Cold Dust Girl"
2. THE LIMOUSINES- fantastic synthpop duo from both Campbell and Livermore that just got inked to Universal Republic records after their 'more infectious than swine flu' demo of 'very busy people' found its way onto the Live 105 playlist. (for fans of: Postal Service, Owl City, Electric President, Play Radio Play) LISTEN: "Very Busy People"
3. WHITE RABBITS- NYC sextet release their utterly brilliant sophomore effort 'It's Frightening,' which will undoubtedly monopolize many of 2009's year-end best of lists. (for fans of: Spoon, The Shins, Adam and the Ants, Margot and the Nuclear so and so's, Billy Joel)
LISTEN: "Percussion Gun"
4. JAMES YUILL- UK laptop specialist deftly combines lush electronic soundscapes, danceable indie-pop beats and bittersweet acoustic melodies. (for fans of: Jimmy Tamborello, Kings of Convenience, Erlend Oye, The Whitest Boy Alive)
LISTEN: "No Surprise"
5. EMPIRE OF THE SUN- Rising out of the ashes of Aussie folk-rock collective Sleepy Jackson, Empire Of The Sun create cosmic prog-disco grooves and epic electro glam-pop that will have you dancing, er, trippin' for hours. (for fans of: Mgmt, ELO, Cut Copy, 10cc, Hot Chip, Never Ending Story soundtrack)
LISTEN: "Walking on a Dream"
6. PASSION PIT- Boston hipsters on the verge of world domination with their auspicious debut 'Manners,' released on NYC label French Kiss Records. (label founded by Les Sav Fav bassist) played popscene's Halloween party last year @ Mezzanine with Yelle and really blew the SF party revelers away! (For Fans Of: Chromeo, Phoenix, Of Montreal, Flaming Lips)
LISTEN: "The Reeling"
7. CITY LIGHT- compelling and promising new San Francisco indie-rock outfit that has been dominating my ipod ever since they sent me the advance of their debut release 'Burned Out Bright' last month. (For Fans Of: Pinback, Yo La Tengo, The American Analog Set, Dinosaur jr., Pedro The Lion)
LISTEN: "Hwy 99"
8. MIIKE SNOW - NYC - by way of Sweden - new electronic-experimental-dub-pop project is actually a full band and not the eclectic work of a solo-artist that goes by the name of Miike. their debut record on Downtown Records is a stunning piece of music that is admirably impossible to compartmentalize into one specific genre. The first single 'Animal' is destined to be one of this summer's best. (For Fans Of: Gnarls Barkley, Royskopp, Diplo, Prince, Cassius, Bob Marley, Black Ghosts)
LISTEN: "Animal"
9. THE HUNDRED DAYS- SF post-punk 5-piece and yet another exciting new Bay Area band to watch for this summer! (For Fans of: Joy Division, Editors, White Lies, Gang Of Four)
LISTEN: "So What"
10. PAPER ROUTE- Nashville nu-gazers and architects of some epic and soaring atmospheric and ambient dream-rock. (for fans of Maps, M83, Mew, Slowdive)
LISTEN: "Carousel"
11. AMAZING BABY- yet another superb Brooklyn band to put on your new music radar. sounds like if Jarvis Cocker, Marc Bolan and Jason Pierce got together for a 24-hour binge session and emerged unscathed with an album of the year contender. 'Rewild', Amazing Baby's debut full-player, is chalk full of druggy and hypnotic anthems, psychedelic nuggets and dreamy shoegaze lullabies. (For Fans Of: Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, BRMC, T-Rex, Roxy Music, Secret Machines)
LISTEN: "Headdress"
12. SETTLE- latest signing to the legendary punk rock Epitaph family! debut album from new Pennsylvania band 'At home we are tourists' drops next week and possesses an energetic and emotive sampling of post-hardcore, post-punk and angular rhythmic guitar sensibilities. (for fans of: Rival Schools, Photo Atlas, Rites of Spring, Get-up Kids, Jets to Brazil)
LISTEN: "Murder"
13. AMANDA BLANK- underground hipster MC and generator of some sick trashy-electro-booty punk, check out her brand new indie club floorfilla 'Might like you Better' (for fans of: Spank Rock, MIA, Peaches, Yelle, Leg Warmers, Headbands and other cool-kid fashion accessories)
LISTEN: "Might Like You Better"
14. I AM EMPIRE- Attention Sharks fans: a'right, i know you're all still bumming about the early exit from the NHL playoffs this year, but don't fret too hard because you are all the proud owners of an awesome South Bay local music scene right now! you've got The Limousines, Dredg, Ambience, uh, Smash Mouth, and now you triumphantly add THIS new band I AM EMPIRE to that impressive list!
