COACHELLA RUMORS RUNNING RAMPANT

(Friday 1/5/07)

Party Ben and Madden gettin’ crazy at Coachella ‘06

So, yes, how pathetic is it that there are a bunch of us here at the station that spend half the year planning for Coachella and the other half talking about how great it was. Well, if you’re like us and spend so much time at your jobs that you don’t really get a lot of vacations, and if you’re like us and never really had that college “spring break” experience you see on MTV because when you were at college you were flat broke and spent any spare time either working or studying… then you can see why hanging around a pool with our friends and having drinks and then going to see some cool bands is a big deal to us.

First let’s get out of the way the probable confirmations that we know of at this point, whether from reputable sources or from the bands letting it slip on their websites or in an interview or somebody saying they think they saw that somewhere.

Apparently Confirmed artists at Coachella (April 27-29 2007):

  • LCD Soundsystem
  • Air
  • Lupe Fiasco
  • Hot Chip
  • Cornelius
  • Oh No! Oh My!
  • VNV Nation
  • Novatron
  • MSTRKRFT
  • Digitalism
  • Fields
  • Silversun Pickups
  • Shiny Toy Guns

Okay, looking good over there on the side stage. I guess Air could play main stage at like 5pm again.

Now, here’s where it gets tricky: some sleuthing around on the Pollstar website can give you a clue about who’s touring in the general vicinity around that time. First thing to note is that lots of the bands tend to play SF right before or after the weekend. Some interesting things pop up.

Kaiser Chiefs
Thu 4/18 Toronto
Sat 4/20 Chicago
Fri 4/27 San Francisco

Gwen Stefani
Wed 4/25 Bakersfield
Sat 4/28 Phoenix
Mon 4/30 Salt Lake City

Fine for the Chiefs, but Gwen Stefani? Maybe after the last album, but this one isn’t making her any friends in the Coachella crowd. Hmm.

Anyhoo, now we can move on to completely unsubstantiated rumors, wish lists, and speculation. First of all, it’s the question of “where do they go from here?” After snaring basically every great 80s band (New Order, Cure, Pixies, Depeche) making a huge and failed try at the last one (The Smiths), there’s no great “reunion” or “revival” band to bring back. And My Bloody Valentine is not happening my friends, sorry. B-52s would be cute I suppose for an 80s band, maybe Duran Duran or Pet Shop Boys? In terms of mega-Alternative radio stars, they’ve had everyone except U2. Which would be pretty cool despite the limpness of their recent material. But what do U2 get out of it, they could do their own concert in the desert. And of course Smashing Pumpkins if they ever actually make that album and don’t break up again before April. As far as mega-stars in general, there’s Prince and there’s David Bowie. Both would be interesting but not necessarily earth-shattering, and seem unlikely. In terms of a hip-hop star taking the Kanye “look at me I’m a rapper playing Coachella” slot, there’s Jay-Z, and maybe Missy of course. I was kind of hoping for Justin Timberlake to take the Madonna “I take over the dance tent” slot, but it sure looks like that’s Miss Stefani’s.

After that it’s all repeats as far as the main stage goes. Chili Peppers makes sense, maybe a Bjork, Gnarls on the main stage? Sonic Youth have had a good year. Portishead were heavily rumored for ’06 and that went nowhere, but they apparently have a new album coming out soon, perhaps that makes them more likely now. Do Arcade Fire make the jump to the main stage as well, since I can’t imagine them not playing? Will Queens of the Stone Age or Radiohead or Daft Punk make a comeback? Howabout that Beck?

Okay, well, putting together all the rumors and known quantities, let’s make a fake lineup of what could possibly come together here, shall we?
