MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT REPORT FOR FRIDAY MAY 9 2008
New Movies
The reviews are in and they aren’t good for the two big movies opening up this week. The world’s sexiest driver Speed Racer is brought to life by Emile Hirsch and the Wachowski Brothers in what critics are calling bloated and boring. What Happens in Vegas with Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz isn’t generating much love either with critics calling it a mediocre monstrosity. Looks like Iron Man could be Number 1 again.
Weezer Leak
Eight songs from Weezer's upcoming Red Album have leaked online. Some of the songs that have begun circulating include "Troublemaker," "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" and the first single, "Pork and Beans." There has been no comment from Weezer about what—if any—action they plan on taking. When this happened to Gnarls Barkley a couple of months ago—they released their album ahead of schedule. The Red Album is scheduled to be out on June 24th.
Emo Suicide
A British coroner has raised concerns that emo music played a role in the suicide of 13-year-old My Chemical Romance fan Hannah Bond. She hung herself from a bunk bed after informing her parents that she was going to kill herself and leaving a note signed "Living Disaster." At the inquest the coroner said, "The emo overtones concerning death and associating it with glamour I find very disturbing." Her father, Ray, said that his daughter had inflicted harm on herself previously as part of what she told him was an "emo initiation ceremony."
Hanna Montana Ratings Problem
People are looking to Miley Cyrus' recent controversy with Vanity Fair to explain a 24 percent drop in the ratings her show, Hannah Montana. The decline in viewership from the last new episode two months ago, to the most recent one on May 4th was reported by Nielson this week. However, MSNBC.com makes the point that overall ratings for the show have been in decline and Disney is counting on a new record release this summer to give the show a boost.
This Sounds So Awesome
Talk about appointment television. Scott Baio and Jason Hervey are producing a new VH1 reality series focusing on male teen idols from the 80s and 90s. The eight celebs will live together and receive mentoring from a life coach and industry experts, with each required to either attempt a career comeback or give up showbiz for good. The series is set to debut early next year.
This Weekend on TV------ Saturday Night Live is back this weekend with our old friend Shia LaBeouf returning to host with musical guest My Morning Jacket.
The Final Word--- The final word comes from Dave Grohl who posted an open letter to Metallica online. "Dear Metallica: Hey, it's Dave! Remember me? Yeah, I'm the guy that's been listening to your band faithfully since 1983. I bought your first album Kill 'Em All...that album changed my life and I've been listening to your albums ever since (even St. Anger!). I can't wait to hear the new stuff, and no matter what you guys do I'll always be first one at the shop waiting to hear it. I'm sure you'll come out and blow everybody's minds, because you're Metallica
