METALLICA, BLINK-182, OTHERS DONATE TO DEFTONES CHARITY AUCTION
Metallica and Blink-182 are among the acts that have donated prizes to a charity auction to raise money for Deftones bass player Chi Cheng, who has been in a semi-comatose state for more than a year since being involved in a traffic accident last November. Cheng's insurance company dropped him last January and his family has faced a steadily rising amount of medical bills related to his continuing care. The auction takes place as Deftones plays two benefit shows for Cheng on Thursday and Friday night (November 19th and 20th) at the Avalon in Hollywood, California.
The auction kicked off on Tuesday (November 17th) and is scheduled to run through December 8th. Prizes so far include:
- A day in the studio with Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 to produce a track for your band
- A trip to Helsinki, Finland to attend HIM's sold-out New Year's Eve show, including a meet-and-greet with the band, round-trip flight, and hotel for two nights
- A signed ESP guitar from Metallica
- System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan's personal Tama drum kit, autographed by him
- Signed gear from Deftones
- An autographed motorcycle helmet from Slayer
- A pair of three-day general admission and VIP passes to Coachella Festival 2010
- An autographed ESP guitar from My Chemical Romance
More items will be put up for bidding next Tuesday (November 24th).
- This week's two benefit shows are expected to include some surprise guests.
- Members of many of the bands who donated items also participated in the recording of "A Song For Chi," which can be downloaded for free at its website. You can also make a donation there.
- Deftones will release a new album sometime in early 2010, with Sergio Vega filling in for the stricken Cheng.

MUDVAYNE LANDS SCREAMING HIT AT ROCK RADIO
Mudvayne's new single, "Scream With Me," got added to 70 rock radio playlists last week, instantly making it the biggest new song on the airwaves. The track is taken from the band's upcoming self-titled album, which singer Chad Gray told us he's excited to see come out next month: "It's a rad record, man. I think it's definitely a Mudvayne record. I think it's a progression, kind of following the same pattern, but it's a little more retro-fitted. I'm not gonna say that we wrote (debut album) LD50 again, we didn't, or (second album) The End Of All Things To Come, but it definitely has a lot of heavy element to it, and I'm really proud of the record."
- Two other tunes from the album, "Beautiful And Strange" and "Heard It All Before," are currently streaming online.
- The new Mudvayne album will be out on December 22nd.
- The CD's cover art and packaging -- including lyrics, credits, inside art and photos -- will be entirely white and only visible with a black light.
- The record will come in four versions: a standard CD, a glow-in-the-dark vinyl edition, a limited edition of 100,000 copies featuring a keychain-sized black light, and a super limited edition of 1,000 copies containing the album on CD, the vinyl version, a 24-inch black light, a black light reactive poster and a black light reactive decal. All four are available for pre-order now.
FLYLEAF DEBUTS IN TOP 10 OF 'BILLBOARD' ALBUM CHART
Flyleaf's second album, Memento Mori, debuted at Number Eight on the Billboard album chart on Wednesday (November 18th), selling 56,000 copies in its first week of release. That's nearly 31 times the amount that the group's self-titled debut sold in its first week back in late 2005, when it moved 1,825 copies before going on to eventually sell more than 1.2 million over the course of the next two years.
Bassist Pat Seals told us that the Texas-based act took a more hands-on approach in the studio this time: "We definitely took a more pro-active, like -- you know, our name's gonna be on this. If something stupid comes out, and it's Flyleaf, then we look like fools, not anyone else, you know. And so we did our best, we hung on with our toenails into what we believed in, and I think it shows definitely a lot more on this record. It feels more like ours than the last one."
- Flyleaf is currently touring in support of Memento Mori and plays on Friday night (November 20th) in Baltimore.
- Other rock debuts on the chart included Switchfoot's Hello Hurricane at Number 13 with 39,000 copies sold, Dashboard Confessional's Alter The Ending at Number 19 with sales of 30,000 copies, and Hollywood Undead's Desperate Measures live CD/DVD at Number 29 with 21,000 copies moved. The week's Number One debut, Bon Jovi's The Circle, sold 163,000 copies.
TOOL FRONTMAN PLANS THREE MORE WINE SIGNINGS
frontman Maynard James Keenan and his winemaking partner Eric Glomski will do three final bottle signings this year of wines from their Arizona Stronghold Vineyard consortium. The pair will sign at Whole Foods Market outlets in Tucson, Arizona on December 6th, Santa Barbara, California on December 8th and Las Vegas on December 9th. The Tucson signing will last from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., while the other two will go from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Tool
- These signings will finish up a year in which Keenan and Glomski completed over three dozen signing events at Whole Foods stores throughout the U.S.
- Keenan paired his Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards with Glomski's Page Springs Cellars to create Arizona Stronghold, and told us the ultimate goal is to create a self-sustaining community in the Sedona region: "What we're trying to do is re-educate people in a way to show them, look, if we can somehow as a culture catch up with where we came from, with small communities, with a cornerstone of a vineyard and a winemaking community, it's almost like that's the catalyst. It's just the cornerstone. And then you start to remember how you can grow your own food and you don't have to panic about any of this stuff."
- A documentary about Keenan and Glomski's quest to bring the wine industry to Arizona's Verde Valley, titled Blood Into Wine: The Arizona Stronghold, is in post-production and set to arrive in theatres in late February 2010.
- Keenan is currently on tour with his side band, Puscifer, which starts a two-night stand in Denver on Friday (November 20th). Tool is tentatively slated to begin work on a new album sometime next year.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS CANCEL UPCOMING SHOWS TO FINISH ALBUM
Stone Temple Pilots have postponed their previously announced shows in December and January in order to complete work on their first studio album in more than eight years, according to Blabbermouth.net. The shows, which were slated mostly for Canada and the Midwest, will be rescheduled for sometime next year. The new disc will be the band's first since it reunited in 2008 and follows up its last recorded effort, 2001's Shangri-La-Dee-Da.
- Plans for a new STP album were complicated earlier this year by a legal dispute between the band's label, Atlantic Records, singer Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz. Reports have indicated that Weiland and Kretz were looking for a new deal, while the label claimed they were bound to their original contract.
- During STP's hiatus, Weiland recorded two albums with Velvet Revolver and a solo record, while guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist Robert DeLeo recorded one album with Army Of Anyone.
SLASH DEFENDS FERGIE SINGING 'PARADISE CITY'
Slash took to Twitter to defend Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie's vocal performance on a new recording she did with Slash of the Guns N' Roses classic "Paradise City," also featuring Cypress Hill. A leaked copy of the recording surfaced online last week, while Slash is contemplating whether to include it on his new solo album. The former Guns guitarist tweeted, "Until now, not too many people have heard Fergie sing Rock & Roll but she sings it better (than) most dudes I know. She's a screamer at heart."
- The record, titled Slash & Friends, is tentatively due out in March 2010.
- Among the other guests appearing on the album are Dave Grohl, Flea, Chris Cornell, Duff McKagan, Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Nicole Scherzinger, Meat Loaf, Maroon 5's Adam Levine and Ozzy Osbourne, who contributes vocals to the first single.
- Slash "and friends" will perform at a fundraiser for the Los Angeles Youth Nation at Hollywood's Avalon Theater on November 22nd. Ozzy, Billy Idol, Andrew Stockdale, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, Dave Navarro and Travis Barker are all tentatively slated to appear.
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH PLAYS SHOW WITHOUT GUITARIST
Five Finger Death Punch played a show in Oslo, Norway on Wednesday night (November 18th) without guitarist Zoltan Bathory after Bathory fell ill, according to Blabbermouth.net. A Norwegian metal radio host reported that vocalist Ivan Moody appeared onstage shortly before Five Finger Death Punch's set to say that Bathory was "really sick" and had been taken to the hospital. Moody gave the crowd the choice of seeing the band perform as a four-piece or cancel and come back another time, with the audience voting for the show to go on.
- There have been no further details on Bathory's illness.
- Bathory caused a stir in late September when he went "missing" for several days following a show in Las Vegas, prompting the band to start a panicked public search for him. Bathory claimed he was just partying and that it "got out of hand a little bit."
